THANK YOU WOMEN’S CENTURY CLUB
What a nice setting for our lunch at the Women’s Century Club. The ladies including DON KOHLER’S wife Evelyn put on a delicious lunch and we even had piano music!

BOB CLEM – AIRPORT SECURITY
Regarding flying “taking off is optional, but landing is mandatory”. After imparting these words of wisdom, Bob Clem spoke about the changes in airport security since 9/11. On 9/11 all airplanes is the US were ordered to land and airports couldn’t re-open until new Federal standards were met. 28 hours after the 9/11 events, the Yakima airport was the first airport in the US to re-open. One of the requirements to re-opening was that all of the cars in the parking lot had to be moved at least 300 feet from the terminal. So all of the cars in the parking lot were towed to JM Perry. Bob shared some of the ridiculous FAA regulations that have come about because of 9/11, such as a requirement that a tow-truck and driver be present in front of the airport at all times – a cost of $500 per day. Another one is the requirement that a bird count be taken at the airport – this would take a year and cost $46,000. Bob worked with the FAA, by saying “no” to save the airport money. The tow-truck requirement was subsequently eliminated and the bird count is being paid for by the Feds at a reduced cost of $17,000.

The main goal of the airport is to bring in another airline to replace United Express. Currently the airport is looking at four potential airlines, the best prospect is one out of Montana. This airline would fly to Seattle, Spokane, Tri-Cities, Boise, and Portland.
