Dirk Marler CLERGY DAY GOT OFF TO A GREAT START
BECKY SCHOLL did us proud by delivering an invocation that must have been the envy of Tuesday's throng of Clergy Day professionals. Her invocation was followed by the best version of "America" this writer has heard in 16 years as a member. All that practice our guests receive singing hymns sure paid off!
TOO MANY GUESTS TO LIST
The room was filled with guests from neighboring Kiwanis clubs and all of our clergy guests.
SERGEANT LT. MEL FLEECED THE FLOCK
Sergeant at-arms MEL LIGHT appropriately fleeced the flock with a round of Bible trivia. Not many escaped without paying up.
MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT
Sheriff KEN IRWIN introduced the musical group, "The Generations Quartet" for Tuesday's entertainment. The group is from the West Valley Church of the Nazarene.
ALL ABOUT THE SIDEWALK SEMINARY
Our Clergy Day speaker was DAVE KELLEY, who is a long-time local pastor and also spent ten years as a Yakima Police Officer. Kelley referred to his police work as his "sidewalk seminary."
Kelley observed that he did not necessarily deal with different people when he made the move from police officer to full-time minister some 27 years ago.
Dave is now the Executive Director of Chaplain Ministries and is the local police and fire chaplain. The service began in February 1997 and is offered free of charge. In his capacity, Kelley said he works with officers and their families, and also does death notifications.
According to Kelley, the chaplain work blends his Christian experience with what he likes to do in police work.
