President Doug opened the meeting at the West Coast Convention Center with a ding on a water glass instead of our regular Bell. Guests introduced by Dan Fisher (holder of the RAT) included Dede, wife of Mac Porter; Lynn Buchanon of the Kamaikin Kiwanis Klub (KKK); and Bret Mead, guest of Dan Fisher. Dan passed on the rat - now a chick - (chicken type chick) to Steve Soelberg.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS & DIRECTORS
It's official! Our new officers & directors for 2002-2003 have been elected by the membership. President Designate is Barbara Greco; President Elect is Russ Dix: and for Vice President Dirk Marler. Directors are elected for 2 years (2002-2004) include Brian Blount, Steve Boekholder, Mel Light, Vanetta Miller, Amy Neal, and Kirsten Stoffer. Congratulations and Thank You!

CLERGY APPRECIATION DAY MAY 14TH
Next week we're back at the Gateway with our Clergy Appreciation Day. A signup went around to sponsor your favorite clergy person to lunch at this annual event. If you didn't signup and still want to include someone, contact Becky Scholl, Roger Bell or Velma Crawford to make sure they're added to the lunch count. Dave Edler will be our keynote speaker and special entertainment is planned.

SIGNUP GALORE!
Signups going around for a Kiwanis Wine Tour of some of our valleys finest wineries. Tentative dates are May 26th or June 16th. Cost approximately $15-$20 per person if enough people are interested. Signup for Camp Roganunda work day June 8th. Signup going around for interclubs to Roslyn 6pm May 14th, and Kamiakin at noon May 23rd at the old Country Buffet.

PROGRAM: MENTAL RETARDATION TOUR OF CHINA
We were treated to a slide show by Karen Hoffman of Provident Services of her trip to China. Karen was invited to join a tour to China by the American Association on Mental Retardation. She toured facilities in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Xi'an (pronounced She-on), and Beijing. Provident Services employs and trains retarded and handicapped persons to become self sufficient and productive. She visited facilities in China for research and treating of the mentally retarded where treatment is very different than here in the U.S. Patients receive a kind of shock therapy, blood therapy and traditional chinese medications. She visited a live in facility where the residents are taught basic skill in food preparation, food service, table setting, and mixing drinks. She also toured Tiaminam (sp?) square and The Forbidden City in Beijing and saw the terra cotta soldiers found near Xi'an. The night before the group left China (China being 12 hours ahead) was Sept 11th and the group learned of the World Trade Center disaster and the Pentagon. The Chinese people were very gracious and concerned about the tragedy.
