PROGRAM: MENTAL RETARDATION TOUR OF CHINA
We were treated to a slide show by Karen Hoffman of Provident Services of her trip to China. Karen was invited to join a tour to China by the American Association on Mental Retardation. She toured facilities in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Xi'an (pronounced She-on), and Beijing. Provident Services employs and trains retarded and handicapped persons to become self sufficient and productive. She visited facilities in China for research and treating of the mentally retarded where treatment is very different than here in the U.S. Patients receive a kind of shock therapy, blood therapy and traditional chinese medications. She visited a live in facility where the residents are taught basic skill in food preparation, food service, table setting, and mixing drinks. She also toured Tiaminam (sp?) square and The Forbidden City in Beijing and saw the terra cotta soldiers found near Xi'an. The night before the group left China (China being 12 hours ahead) was Sept 11th and the group learned of the World Trade Center disaster and the Pentagon. The Chinese people were very gracious and concerned about the tragedy.
