SALLY BALDWIN
Introduced the program, Mark Layman from the Department of Ecology. His team is responsible for hazardous waste cleanup and spoke to us about methamphetamines. Washington State is number two in the nation in numbers of discovered meth labs. He explained meth is a problem because it is so easy to make. It would take less than an hour to gather the materials to make an extremely pure, powerful stimulant that would keep a user “flying high” for days. A single dose will last for up to 8 hours and can be tweaked to keep a person on the go for as many as four days. Meth works by turning on every pleasure receptor in a body and has no withdrawl symptoms, but it so damages those receptors that when a user stops taking meth they feel absolutely nothing. It is estimated it would take a user 16-18 years to get totally clean. After giving us the facts, Mark then took us through an easy step by step recipe for making meth with common products. The process was so easy it is no wonder that Mark’s office was responsible for 2,000 cleanups last year. Unfortunately, he had already worked on 11 this week.
